St. Georgen am Kreischberg

The municipality of St. Georgen am Kreischberg isn’t simply a much-visited holiday destination in winter. While the Kreischberg understandably attracts lots of skiers and snowboarders in winter, summer visitors head for the golf course, the Holzmuseum (Wood Museum) or the "world championship mountain" of Kreischberg for hiking. St. Georgen has also been voted "most beautiful flower village in Styria" a number of times.

Holiday in St. Georgen am Kreischberg

With 1,880 inhabitants, the parish of St. Georgen am Kreischberg consists of St. Georgen, St. Lorenzen, Lutzmannsdorf, Kaindorf, Bodendorf, St. Ruprecht and Falkendorf. A comprehensive range of leisure activities, not to mention peace and a relaxing atmosphere are to be found high and low.

The Kreischberg is the heart of the municipality. With 14 cable cars and lifts and 42 km of descents, it is an absolute winter paradise for skiers and snowboarders. The freestylers among them are brilliantly catered for with the snow park on the Kreischberg. Further highlights include tubing, the Dinopark and Yabba Dabba Doo Land. There is plenty to choose from, from beginner slopes to family-friendly runs to special descents.

In summer, the winter hotspots of the Murau-Kreischberg region transform into an oasis of greenery and colour. The 18-hole golf course situated between the Kreischberg and the River Mur invites visitors to try to improve their handicap in a beautiful setting. The golf complex has been designed sympathetically to the region with a wood design. Alternatively, why not take the gondola lift onto the world championship mountain to explore the countless hiking trails and picturesque surrounding area.

Wood in the Murau-Kreischberg region

The Holzmuseum (Wood Museum) in St. Ruprecht shows you everything you need to know about one of Austria's most important raw materials. The museum guides visitors through historical workshops and helps them unlock the secrets of modern design and timber construction. The Holzmuseum spans 10,000m² and has exhibited wood in all its facets since 1988.

Currently the largest cantilevered wooden bridge in Europe, the Europabrücke, links St. Georgen and St. Lorenzen over the River Mur and is a feat of Styrian timber construction. It was built according to the motto "Necessity has turned vision into reality." When the bridge fell into a state of disrepair in the 1990s, the municipality decided to upgrade it using a sustainable regional material: wood.

Churches in the parish of St. Georgen am Kreischberg

Stroll for a little over an hour from St. Georgen am Kreischberg and you will come to the Gothic Cäciliakirche (Church of St. Cecilia) in Bodendorf. The wooden ceiling dating back to around 1500 and the 14th and 15th century frescoes are particularly worth a look, as is the simple yet elegant pulpit.

The parish church dedicated to St. George in St. Georgen, the succursal church dedicated to St. Laurence in St. Lorenzen and the parish church of St. Ruprecht are beautiful buildings which you may also like to visit when you are in the Murau-Kreischberg region.
