Parish church St. Georgen

This church dedicated to St. George is located in the centre of St. Georgen am Kreischberg. It was gothicised in the Late Gothic period when the church was remodelled, giving it three aisles and vaulting.

On 23 August 1188, the Romanesque basilica, which most likely took a decade to build, was consecrated and officially opened by Albert, the Archbishop of Salzburg.

The Gothic, three-aisled church is not an original Gothic building, but rather a church building from an earlier, Romanesque style period, with a single nave and a flat ceiling. It was only gothicised in the Late Gothic period ‒ vaulted and given three aisles ‒ when the interior was renovated.
