Cäcilia Church in Bodendorf

This small Gothic jewel, a work of art that has evolved over 700 years, can be reached from St. Georgen in about 30 minutes on foot.

The Church of St. Cecilia stands in a rather solitary spot, and is notable for its wooden beam ceiling and 15th century frescoes. Legend has it that Margarethe Maultasch, incensed by the futile besiegement of Murau, flung a heavy iron horseshoe that had come loose on her mount at the wooden door, where it can still be seen today. The richly ornamented Gothic wooden ceiling from around 1500 and the extremely fine frescoes dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries (the Magi, Catherine, Margarethe and Cecilia legends) are also well worth a look. The 15th century frescoes on the outer wall (Meister v. Schöder) are especially remarkable, as is the elegant Protestant pulpit.
