Experience the Mur Cycling Path
Stages of the Mur Cycling Path
Stages one and two of the Murradweg R2 take you 83 km from the source of the Mur near Muhr, situated in Salzburg's Lungau region, to Murau. From Murau, you embark on stage three to Judenburg (50.4 km). So if you’ve scheduled your first night's rest in Murau, you will have covered the start of the Murradweg perfectly. Further stage destinations include St. Michael, Frohnleiten, Wildon and Bad Radkersburg. In Austria, the Murradweg is 356 km in total, is well-signposted throughout, and passes via asphalt, gravel and dirt roads. In principle, it is a leisurely family tour, although there are a few gradients that are rather more suitable for touring cyclists at the beginning.
The town of Murau
In Murau itself, there are hotels and guesthouses aplenty enabling you to recuperate properly after the first stage. TIP: Stay for two nights and discover the lovely old town of Murau, also known for its beer. Murau itself is notable for its beautiful buildings and medieval atmosphere. Stroll along the Mur, go shopping, visit the Brewery Museum or Castle Murau. Unwind with a trip on the Murtalbahn steam railway, relax at one of the many pavement cafes and enjoy the culinary variety.
Bike hire and bike service points
Of course, the Murau-Kreischberg region is also well-stocked with bike hire and service points. Are you considering doing a stage and would like to hire a bike while you're there? About the Murtalbahn steam railway: the small narrow gauge railway between Unzmarkt and Tamsweg is perfect for a day's cycling tour. Bring your bikes aboard any of the carriages, or store them conveniently in the separate cycle carriage. It is also possible to get on in Murau or St. Georgen/Murau, go to Tamsweg and then return to Murau by bike.
