Summer in the Murau-Kreischberg region
Events in Styria
A particular highlight of the region is the sheer number of events that it offers ‒ and what a shame it would be to miss them when vacationing in the Murau-Kreischberg region. The Murauer Werktage (Murau Workshop Days) take place every July: workshops such as the stone workshop and wood workshop provide an opportunity to try your hand at something new. The ultimate summer event is unquestionably the Murcapulco festival at the end of July, when you get to see the legendary, jaw-dropping spectacle of people jumping off the Mur Bridge and into the river. This is framed by a large winegrowers’ and farmers’ market, traditional, authentic music, a sundowner and the notorious Murcapulco Party. The old town festival "Gasseln" (literally "walking the alleys"), held in Murau in early August, greets visitors with three stages, fashion shows, live craft demonstrations and a children’s programme. The Samson Festival, organised by the Murau Bürgergarde (citizens' guard), rolls around every 15 August, when you can experience the inimitable Samson Parade and a fabulous supporting programme. Murau also hosts the International Music Festival at the end of August.
Summer sport in the region
The numerous hiking trails, ranging from easy routes for families and leisure walkers to peak tours for more active visitors, are all extremely well signposted. Walking trails and route sections that are accessible to prams and pushchairs complete the range of amenities. To help you get up the Kreischberg, there is a gondola lift available in the summer months. Of course, cycling and mountain bike tours are also open to you on your cycling holiday. Plus, horse riding, tennis, rafting and paragliding are just a few more of the options that put the icing on the cake of your activity holiday.
Murau in summer
This welcoming 'town of beer', also known as Austria's capital of wood, is famous for its narrow streets, perfect for meandering. Savour a coffee on one of the numerous terraces, or drop in at the Wood Museum or the Brewery of the Senses. The Murtalbahn steam railway huffs and puffs its way from Murau to Tamsweg and back again ‒ an unforgettable experience, and not just for railway enthusiasts!
Summer programme for families
Over the summer months, the region transforms into a veritable adventure paradise for children. The generous range of family-friendly options, family hotels offering children's activities, campsites, and the chance to spend a holiday on the farm make each family vacation a true experience. There's plenty of fun to be had at the playgrounds, especially the "Generations Playground", which is simply a must. Trampoline, sandpits, swings, water play features and a climbing course will thrill and delight young visitors in equal measure!
