Sölkpass – Styria's mountain pass
The Sölkpass (around 45 minutes from Murau by motorbike) enjoys an altitude of 1,788 metres and runs across the Niedere Tauern in Styria. There is no charge for crossing. The pass links the Murtal valley with the Ennstal valley via a panoramic road. For motorcyclists, the tight bends in the road are nothing if not a highlight, crowned with stunning views of verdant meadows and a glorious mountain panorama. In June and July, you can admire the profusion of alpine rose and alpine azalea in the botanical conservation area around the Sölkpass. There are numerous alpine restaurants and serviced mountain huts along the route.
CAUTION: The Sölkpass is closed in winter until around mid May. In 2018, the opening of the Sölkpass road is planned as late as July.
Popular motorcycle routes in the region
Numerous motorcycle tours start in Murau and return back there; for this reason, we recommend using the Murau-Kreischberg region as your base and planning tours from and to Murau respectively. Or why not stop in the region for a few days to go hiking, enjoy the splendid nature and simply relax.
The Schladminger Tauernrunde
The Schladminger Tauern circular route is around 260 km and encompasses three passes, namely the Twenger Talpass, the Tauernpass and the Sölkpass. You can take a break at Hallstätter lake and maybe hop on a boat trip across the lake. Leaping into these refreshing waters is a real tonic, particularly on hot summer days.
The Großglockner Hochalpenstraße
The Großglockner High Alpine Road is absolutely not to be missed for any motorcyclist. It is a route of some 400 km in length and takes you to Austria's largest national park. The pass road is a total of 48 km, snaking with 36 hairpin bends up to the Edelweißspitze, which stands at just over 2,500 m. From here, you have absolutely jaw-dropping views of several three-thousanders and of course the majestic Großglockner at 3,798 m.
This motorcycle tour via the Nockalm Road is around 280 km long, crossing the mountain passes of Obdacher Sattel (Obdach Saddle) and Klippitztörl. The 28 km pass road across the Klipitztörl is open all year round, and offers a magnificent panoramic view at an altitude of 1,644 m.
