Murau

Murau is a charming medieval town, which beckons visitors to take a stroll or browse the shops. The famous "beer town" is particularly notable for its friendly, welcoming inhabitants. The people of Murau are extremely proud to look back on 800 years of history. This historical background combined with all the trappings of the modern age characterises the town, and can be felt in every nook and cranny.

The town of Murau

This district town is the heart of the Murau-Kreischberg region. Those interested in culture will instantly fall in love with the historical old town and the huge variety of things to do. Take a wander through the town and attend highlights such as light opera and theatre performances, or visit museums and exhibitions. The dynasties of Liechtenstein and Schwarzenberg have made their mark on the town of Murau. Murau presents a wonderful interplay between old and international award-winning architecture.

Since the national exhibition entitled "Holzzeit" (The Age of Wood), Murau has been the wood capital of Austria and the epicentre of the World of Wood initiative.

Murauer Bier too is emblematic of the town. The "Brauerei der Sinne" (Brewery of the Senses) offers an interactive tour on which you can learn all about beer-brewing. In 2010, Murau was designated a "Bierstadt" (town of beer). Beer has been brewed here in CO2-neutral fashion since 2016.

Event highlights such as the Murcapulco festival, the Pfingstspiele (Whitsun Plays), Samson Parade and much more are on the calendar in Murau. Locals attach great importance to their history and culture, and are keen to share it with you!

From June to September, town tours of Murau take place every Monday, which you can happily join on your holiday to the Murau-Kreischberg region.

Alternatively, follow the culture trail and explore the traditional side of the town. Take in the Schillerplatz or the Hauptplatz, the Kapuzinerkirche (Capuchin Church), the Kapuzinerkloster (Capuchin Monastery), Handwerksmuseum (Crafts Museum), the Mursteg (bridge), the parish church and finish your walk at the Raffaltplatz.

History of Murau

Murau was first mentioned in written records as "Castrum Murowe" in 1250. Murowe fort was erected in the 13th century at the intersection of two medieval European trade routes, and a settlement of knights and merchants soon sprang up around it. Murau was granted town status in 1298.

In 1565, Anna Neumann married the last surviving member of the Liechtenstein dynasty, and even today she remains an extraordinary figure in Murau with a far-reaching legacy. She had six husbands; her last, Georg Ludwig von Schwarzenberg, brought the Schwarzenberg dynasty to Murau.

Since as far back as the 13th century, the Murau Bürgergarde (burgher guard) has been one of the most important ambassadors of the town. The Bürgergarde is important both as a protective escort to Murau's procession of the effigy of Samson, an event now listed as an intangible cultural heritage. Today, the Bürgergarde serves as an international ambassador.
