Route from Stadl on the Sonnberg
A leisurely, child-friendly walk on asphalt road, passing a number of mountain farmsteads. The numerous viewing points offering lovely vistas of the Kreischberg are a perfect place for a break.
As the name suggests, the town of Stadl an der Mur is located on the Murradweg cycle trail. It runs along the River Mur from the neighbouring Salzburg region of Lungau to Bad Radkersburg and on to Slovenia and Croatia. The River Mur also offers anglers and those hungry for adventure an unforgettable holiday experience rafting on the Murtal. At the start of the tour, we walk past the parish church of Stadl, dedicated to St. John. In essence a Romanesque church with a late Gothic appearance, it also displays Baroque and neo Gothic features. Along the route, numerous seating facilities invite you to take a break, offering a wonderful panorama of Stadl, with its leisure centre plus bathing lake and the Almdorf Stadl chalet park. Running past mountain farmsteads, the walk provides unique insights into regional agriculture. In the upper part of the route, there is a great view of the slopes at the Sixpack chair lift in the Kreischberg skiing and hiking region.
From the Gasthof Ortner/Stadl village square, we walk back towards the state road. Before reaching it, we follow the signposts left towards Sonnberg/Güttersberg. We follow the road, where after a short time we pass the parish church of Stadl. Before the next ascent, we pass a wayside cross. The road bears right at this point. Past the Sonnberghof (not open), we follow the road to the Gü(i)ttersberg junction, where we turn right and follow the signs. At the next junction, we turn left towards Sonnberg. From here, the route passes by mountain farmsteads up to the highest of those, Reiter and Schaffer (1,339m). Return via the same route.
